ArtWorks Closing Posted June 23, 2009 4:37 PM |

On June 30th, ArtWorks will be closing its community programming as we assess our future in the light of the economic down turn and the challenges it has brought to secure on-going funding.

ArtWorks has been dedicated to fostering the development of understanding and compassion between all members of the Uptown community, including those marginalized due to mental, physical, or social differences. Over the past year and a half, we have successfully attracted and united these diverse groups of people living in Uptown: More than 200 community residents--both disabled and non-disabled--have participated in our activities, discovering similarities, forging lasting friendships, and establishing mutual respect.

Since October 2007, ArtWorks has offered more than 100 workshops ranging from crafts to art instruction; 60 open studios; and 50 crochet and knit circles. We have had 4  shows in the ArtWorks' studio as well as an ongoing public exhibition in Uptown at Inspiration Corporation's CafĂ© Too. Many of our artists have sold work for the first time; and have learned to write artist's statements, and to frame, price, and hang their work. For many, ArtWorks has been a place where they have developed a shared sense of belonging and where their perspectives are valued and represented. Our space and the activities in it have been dedicated to building community, and volunteers have contributed more than 700 hours of services, including developing and leading workshops.

We'd also like to thank the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), who worked closely with us to develop ArtWorks. SAIC art therapy graduate students and faculty, have taught workshops; organized exhibitions and events, and assisted in the daily functioning of our community programming. We'd also like to thank Joyce Dugan of Uptown United for her support; Patrick Manske of MDT for his ongoing support and involvement; Sarah Raskey of the Giving Gallery, and Patricia Huber of Full Circle.
